Fact 1: India has 28 States!

Yes you heard it right! India has 28 states and not 29 states.

In June 2014, Telangana was separated from Andhra Pradesh to form the 29th state of India. We all remember that.

But what happened in October 2019? The State of Jammu & Kashmir was split into 2 – Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh each as 2 separate Union Territories.

So now with Jammu & Kashmir no longer as a state, the final count of how many states are there in India is 28.

Fact 2: India has 8 Union Territories!

As of 2020, India has 8 Union Territories.

When the constitution of India was adopted in 1949, we had only one union territory – Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Over the period, Delhi, Chandigarh, Lakshwadeep and others were added to up the count to 7.

This was until October 2019, when the state of Jammu & Kashmir was reconstituted to form 2 new union territories – Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh. Which brought the number of union territories in India to 9.

Then in January 2020, 2 Union Territories of India, Dadra & Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu were merged to form 1 single union territory called Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu (DNHDD) with Daman as their capital. Hence final count on how many union territories are there in India is 8. This is one interesting fact about India, very few would know.

Fact 3: The Northernmost State of India is Himachal Pradesh!

With Jammu & Kashmir no longer a state, Himachal Pradesh becomes the northernmost state of India.

Fact 4: The Southernmost State of India Is Tamil Nadu!

Yes, It’s Tamil Nadu and not Kerala. Kanyakumari (Cape Comorin) in Tamil Nadu, is the southernmost point of the Indian Mainland. And Indira point in Great Nicobar Island in the southernmost point of India.

Fact 5: The Easternmost State of India Is Arunachal Pradesh!
